In David Jeremiah’s book, Captured by Grace (Chapter 7 page 123), Dr. Jeremiah brings our attention to the song Amazing Grace and how we often do not think of the words of the beautiful hymn when singing it during the worship time. Our thoughts may be on other things and we completely miss the beauty and the reflection of what John Newton felt as he penned the words that echoed his life before and after his conversion. Dr. Jeremiah begins the chapter by saying, By the time we get around to singing the third verse of John Newton’s great hymn, we might be thinking several things: Are we going to sing every single verse? When is the part about being there ten thousand years? These shoes aren’t very comfortable. I wonder if I could sing the alto part? I get tired of soprano sometimes. Hmm, I wonder what these words are about…. Every now and then, someone stumbles upon the last thought. Sometimes I wonder what would happen if we slipped in some different lyrics one Sunday. Maybe we could sneak in a new verse to “Amazing Grace” that went:

I sing every hymn each week in church,
I make every note sublime,
I never pay attention to a single word,
I’m thinking of dinnertime.

Next time you sing “Amazing Grace” think of the life of the person that wrote the words. John Newton found the Savior on a slave ship. Like Paul, he never forgot what Christ did for him and allowed him a “second chance” to live a new and glorious life. Amazing Grace how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me. I once was lost but now I am found, I was blind but now I see.

PRAYING FOR OUR TROOPS:

Pray for the members of our military as they lead, train, work and deploy while defending our nation and safeguarding our freedom. Pray that each one will have the peace of God and will be covered by His powerful protection as they serve. Pray for loved ones who sacrifice by doing without their troop in the day-to-day activities of life. Pray for those who return following stressful combat situations, asking God to help them adjust and to put their lives and service in perspective. Presidential Prayer Team

SPECIAL PRAYER EMPHASIS:

Personnel requests have been submitted for the Gazankhulu and Sekhukhune areas of the Limpopo Province of South Africa. Presently, no IMB missionaries are working in this province where 27 percent of the people claim to be Christian but as few as 3.8 percent are classified as “born again.” Pray the Lord will provide workers for the harvest field. Pray the gospel will reach every person in the Gazankhulu and Sekhukhune areas of the Limpopo Province of South Africa.

If radio’s slim finger can pluck a melody
From night and toss it over a continent or sea;
If the petaled white notes of a violin
Are blown across a mountain or a city’s din;
If songs, like crimson roses, are culled from thin blue air—
Why should mortals wonder if God hears prayer?
